Connecticut Violent Injury Statistics System (CVISS)

In Connecticut and across the nation, violent death is among the top ten causes of death for people aged 1 to 70. From 1990 to 2000, there were 5,030 violent deaths in Connecticut and 580,553 violent deaths in the United States. In order to address the problem of violent deaths in our communities, health professionals need detailed, objective information on these injuries. Such information includes characteristics of the victims, suspects, and weapons.

In 1999, the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center began the process of establishing a violent injury statistics system for Connecticut. Today, information is collected on all violent deaths occurring in Connecticut. In essence, the system consists of collecting diverse information on violent deaths. Personal identifiers such as name or social security numbers are not collected in any form for this project.
