New Teen Driver
Did you know that traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for Connecticut teenagers and that the risk of being in
a car crash is at a lifetime high in a teens’ first 1 to 2 years of driving? Is there anything that can be done to
reduce risks?
If you are a parent or student who is anxiously anticipating or currently dealing with the new driving experience
you’ll want to request a guest speaker for your next Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting.
Garry Lapidus, Director of the Injury Prevention Center, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Associate
Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, is available to a
facilitate a one hour discussion on “Managing your new teen driver”. The purpose of the
discussion is to reduce any anxiety and uncertainties you may feel and replace them with specific actions you
can take to manage the risks of teen driving in your family.
The specific goals of the discussion are to:
- Inform parents and students about the risks of teen driving based on solid, scientific evidence
- Provide practical advice about ways to reduce that risk
- Encourage parent-teen cooperation and involvement throughout the entire process from learning to
drive through independent driving
