Four Questions to Ask About Your Child
- Has your child had wheezing or whistling in the
chest at any time in the last 12 months?
- Has your child awakened at night because of coughing
in the last 12 months?
- Has your child had coughing, wheezing or shortness
of breath with exercise or activity and had to stop
because of these symptoms at any time in the last 12
months?
- When your child has a cold, does the cough usually
last longer than 10 days?
If you answered "YES" to any of these questions, see your
physician who can determine if your child has asthma.
If you answered "NO" to all of these questions and are not
taking any asthma medications, your child has less than a 2%
chance of having asthma. (J of Pediatrics 2001;139:267-272)
Five Things to Remember
- Asthma CAN be controlled. It cannot be cured.
- You, your child and your doctor are a team. Each has
a job to do.
- Make sure you have and understand how to use your
asthma treatment plan.
- Act fast when an asthma attack starts. Know what to
do!
- Avoid the things that start your child's asthma
attacks. Everyone with asthma is bothered by irritants
such as smoke or strong smells. Some people with asthma
also have allergies.
