For the past ten years, the staff of the Center for Motion Analysis has offered a three
to five day instructional course on gait analysis entitled "Clinical Gait Analysis: A
Focus on Interpretation" with staff from the Motion Laboratory at Gillette Children's
Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minnesota.
This course has provided participants with a background in gait analysis methods and
normal gait with a focus on the interpretation and discussion of case examples. Clinical
examples have involved children with neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy. This
three day course has been attended by orthopaedists, kinesiologists, physical therapists,
technicians and engineers responsible for the collection and interpretation of gait
analysis data. The objectives of the course were to
- to develop a basic understanding of the components of computer-based gait analysis and
algorithms used for data reduction;
- to gain an appreciation for the limitations and potential sources of error in clinical
gait analysis;
- to develop an understanding of normal gait with respect to the parameters collected in
computerized gait analysis;
- to demonstrate and perform the components of a protocol used for clinical gait analysis;
&
- to develop the skills of gait analysis data interpretation and corresponding clinical
decision-making in patients with neuromuscular disorders.
