The original laboratory to study human walking was designed and built by United Technologies Corporation in 1980-1981. James R. Gage, M.D., an internationally renowned pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, was instrumental in getting this laboratory started. With his medical specification, Ken Taylor, Ph.D., a biomedical engineer from UTC, brought together the technical expertise that made this innovative laboratory a realization in such a short period of time. The first clinical patient was tested in September, 1981. On April 2, 1996, Connecticut Children's Medical Center opened in Hartford, Connecticut. This new children's hospital was formed from the merger of Newington Children's Hospital with pediatric units from Hartford Hospital (Hartford, Connecticut) and the University of Connecticut Health Center (Farmington, Connecticut). That spring, the entire Center for Motion Analysis (equipment and staff) moved from Newington to Hartford, Connecticut. In the many years of its operation, over 5,000 gait assessments of both children and adults have been performed in the Center for Motion Analysis. During this time, the laboratory has evolved from cameras based on vacuum tube technology and a room-sized computer system to modular equipment and computers based on the latest solid state electronics. The computer programs used in the laboratory to analyze the walking patterns of patients have continued to be developed further and improved by the current staff members. The Center for Motion Analysis staff will contact the patient and schedule an appointment. Appointments are usually available within 2-3 weeks. Approximately three weeks after the gait analysis is carried out, a written report, with interpretations of the data, will be completed and sent to the referring clinician. |
