Department
Department Description: Clinical Nutrition Services identifies patients at nutritional risk and provides nutritional assessment and intervention to improve their ability to heal. Every patient admitted to CCMC is screened for nutritional risk by a diet technician. Once identified, a registered dietitian(R.D.) will review all aspects of the patient including growth, ability to eat and tolerate food, increased nutritional needs related to disease, medications that may decrease utilization of nutrients and nutrition educational needs of the family. The R.D. works with the medical team on rounds to help put in place the nutritional care plan.
R.D.’s also counsel patients on an outpatient basis as referred by their primary care provider. Issues include obesity, failure to thrive, food allergy, hypercholesterolemia, etc. Outpatient R.D.’s can be found in Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Genetics, the H.I.V. Clinic and the Feeding Team. R.D.’s provide outpatient nutritional monitoring and care for patients on the ketogenic diet for decreasing seizures.
