Department
The medical call center’s staff of pediatric nurses provides after-hours telephone triage and advice to the patients of the 300community-based pediatricians who subscribe to this service.  
Technology
Pedi Advice Line nurses work in private offices within their homes. CCMC provides business telephone lines, fax machines,and telephones. Staff have the option to write or type nurses notes. Attendance is required at monthly staff meetings and at biweekly medical records transfers held at the PAL office.
Nurses
Pedi Advice Line nurses typically have experience as office nurses, telephone nurses, emergency department nurses, or school nurses: settings where triage is practiced. Current RN’s have diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, or masters degrees in  nursing. Experience ranges from 4 years to 40 years in pediatrics. 
Orientation
The specialty of telephone triage nursing is taught to new employees over a training period of 40 to 60 hours. Instructors of the manager and Lead triage nurses. New  employees are coached in triage, symptoms-based clinical guidelines, call documentation, role play, physician consultation, special
needs communications, follow-up calls, and risk management.
Scheduling
The service operates after (office) hours only, from 7pm to 7am on all 365 nights per year. Nurses work 4, 6, 8 or 12 hours shifts depending upon the seasonal call volume. Weekend= every 3rd weekend rotation: holidays by rotation. In addition to on-duty hours, nurses share the stand-by assignments for call overflowand staff absenteeism.
Educational Opportunities
In-service education in the topics of primary care is provided by CCMC medical staff,  subscribing pediatricians from the community, and various program staff. Additional opportunities exist for Grand Rounds, evening lectures, and conferences related to primary care or health care communications.
