The Medical/Surgical patient care areas are dedicated to providing state of the art nursing care for children of all ages, from neonates thru young adults. The nursing teams embrace a philosophy of family centered care thru primary nursing, service excellence and evidence-based practice. We value staff involvement in our unit and hospital wide operations and initiatives.
As a member of the medical/surgical nursing staff, you will have the ability to make a difference in the life of a child and can choose one of the following units:
MS 6
This 28-bed unit cares for children from school age thru young adults. A diverse population is seen, with specialty areas including orthopedics, rehabilitation, and behavioral health. Typical patients might include a child recovering from an appendectomy or spinal fusion, a teen with an eating disorder, or a child needing rehabilitative services following an accident.
MS 7
MS 7 is a 28-bed unit that cares for younger children, infants thru pre-school. Specialty areas include ENT and craniofacial reconstruction. Typical patients include infants post-op cleft palate repair, infants with bronchiolitis or sepsis, and school age children post op Tonsillectomy.
MS 8
MS 8 is a 20 bed non-infectious unit. This unit cares for children of all ages. Specialty areas include Oncology, Hematology, Post-op cardiac patients, and infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Typical patients might include children receiving chemotherapy, patients with sickle cell disease admitted for pain, and infants with congenital cardiac defects.
MS 8 offers a Hematology/Oncology Foundation course to all new employees and offers The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) Biotherapy Course twice a year. MS 8 is also active in the local APHON chapter.
OrientationWe provide individualized orientation programs for new graduates as well as experienced nurses to ensure that our nurses are comfortable and confident in delivering care to our patients and their families.
New staff participate in the Nursing Residency Program, which is comprised of didactic classes and hands on clinical practice with designated preceptors. Length of orientation is tailored to individual needs.

Educational OpportunitiesThe professional growth and development of our staff is paramount. We provide educational opportunities to promote life-long learning, including in-house seminars, conferences and workshops, as well as the ability to attend off site events. Each unit has clinical educators that are dedicated to advancing each nurse to their fullest potential.
