The Pediatric ICU is an 18 bed critical care unit  in a free standing children’s hospital.  Children aged newborn to 18 years present a wide variety of medical and surgical diagnoses and present a high degree of job satisfaction for our pediatric critical care nurses.  Diagnoses commonly seen are:  *Respiratory illness & exacerbation; *Congential heart defects; *Multi trauma; and *Neurosurgical emergencies.
Technology
Pediatric critical care nursing is a complex and rapidly changing specialty which opens up a world of challenges and growth for nurses.  We utilize the latest in advanced technology to monitor, diagnose, and treat the critically ill pediatric patient. Some of the technology used includes the Oscillators A and B; intracranial pressure monitoring; intracardiac monitoring; peritoneal dialysis; and innovative skin care interventions.
Nurses
Our pediatric nursing staff believe the restoration and maintenance of family health can best be accomplished through primary nursing and an interdisciplinary approach to meet the needs of the individual family.  Nurses have the opportunity to change professional practice from within the PICU.  Along with the advanced technology, nurses are becoming increasingly involved in evidence based practice that supports quality patient outcomes.  The PICU is presently implementing a Shared Governance structure and has membership opportunites on the Operations Council, Performance Improvement Council, Education Council, and Practice and Research Councils.
Orientation
We provide individualized and comprehensive orientation programs for new graduates as well as experienced nurses to ensure that our work is approached with competence and confidence.
Scheduling
There are creative and flexible schedules available to suit your lifestyle.  Along with full and part time positions, the PICU offers nurse created scheduling, a modified 36 hour work week, a weekend only plan, and every third weekend for full time employees.
Educational Opportunities
The nursing team in the PICU includes some the best prepared professionals in this double specialty area.  We offer an individualized competency based orientation with specific educational programs for pediatric critical care. We provide 24 hour educational support; use clinical preceptors; provide education through our own nurse educator positions; provide educational counseling in partnership with Central Education and Human Resources; and offer continuing educational programs to advance nurses to an expert skill level.
