Department
The Speech and Language Department at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center offers a full array of inpatient and outpatient services to patients from infancy through adolescence.  We provide assessment and therapy to treat various conditions impacting feeding and swallowing or cognitive, speech-language, and/or social functioning.  We offer specialty evaluations and intervention to support patients with pervasive developmental disorders.  We provide collaborative assessment and intervention services through the CCMC Feeding Team and Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology Team.
Outpatient services are offered at the medical center in Hartford as well as at our satellite locations in Avon and Glastonbury.
Technology
We are well equipped with computer technology to support the assessment and treatment of voice and communication disorders including state-of-the art Visi-Pitch and Nasometer systems as well as a number of augmentative communication devices used for evaluation and treatment.  We use videoflouroscopy in conjunction with our Radiology Department to conduct Modified Barium Swallow studies.
Staff
Our clinical staff has grown considerably over the past 5 years.  We now have a staff of 10 full- or part-time speech-language pathologists and expect to add at least 2 full-time positions within the next year as we expand at our satellite locations in Avon and Glastonbury.  Our clinicians hold CT state licensure and American Speech and Hearing Association certification of clinical competency or are working within a clinical fellowship year.  Our speech-language pathologists possess core skills in the provision of pediatric speech-language assessment and treatment services. Individual clinicians have developed areas of specialty interest through continuing education and clinical experience. The team works closely with specialists throughout the hospital to provide interdisciplinary care to patients.  As hospital employees, our speech-language pathologists are able to participate in all CCMC programs and committees.  We also work in close collaboration with local schools and Birth-to-three agencies.
Orientation
A newly hired speech-language pathologist participates in a thorough orientation program including a full day of hospital orientation followed by a period of comprehensive departmental and clinical orientation.  During the orientation period the new clinician has the opportunity to observe other colleagues during evaluation and treatment sessions. After completion of departmental and clinical orientation the new clinician works with a preceptor who evaluates the clinician’s clinical competencies while providing supervised care.  Upon demonstration of clinical competencies a new clinician gradually becomes more independent and starts to take on a clinical caseload in a highly supportive, collaborative team environment.

Scheduling
We offer flexible schedules such as early morning, late afternoon/evening and Saturday hours, or 4-day workweeks for full-time employees.

Educational Opportunities
We provide on-going staff development opportunities through teamwork and collaboration and encourage participation in staff in-service and case review presentations.   Upon request clinicians are able to shadow other clinical staff throughout the organization and we offer shadowing experiences and in-service presentations to our resident staff and other interested pediatric specialists.  We also work closely with academic institutions to provide meaningful practicum experiences to qualified graduate students.
Support for continuing education through external conferences and tuition reimbursement is available to all staff after the first 6 months of employment.
